A new COVID-19 outbreak has been detected at Newton Center, a long-term care facility in Sanford.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that they were aware of 10 positive COVID-19 infections at Newton Center, part of a number of new outbreaks that Maine health officials were investigating to start the week.

"We just opened the outbreak investigation within the last couple of hours," Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah told reporters in a Zoom meeting Monday afternoon. "We have a designated epidemiologist investigator as we speak gathering information about those individuals -- when they started showing symptoms, when they tested positive, things of that nature. They will piece that together.

"I can't comment at this time when or how the virus found its way in, but in general we've found that nursing home outbreaks are related to employees, but not in every situation."
