Portland, Maine is filled with historic buildings that still shine light on the city’s rich history. The Westin Portland Harborview Hotel building, which opened in 1927, still has the infamous “EASTLAND” sign on display from the hotel’s first name, “The Eastland”.

The Eastland Hotel Portland, Maine

Part of Portland’s rich history are our celebrity appearances, which we used to have way more of back in the day. (I will never get over how jealous I am of my co-workers having worked in radio in the '80s. Never.)

When the Westin Harborview was The Eastland, many famous folk walked through those doors. Except for former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt who, as the Press Herald shares, was turned away in 1946 because she wanted her dog in her room with her.

While dogs are welcome in the hotel now, what was once the rooftop pool is now permanently closed and gone. The same Press Herald article shares an iconic story involving Ozzy Osbourne, The Eastland Hotel, and their rooftop pool.

The Prince of Darkness got a little too rowdy at one of his parties at the hotel’s rooftop pool which led to him chucking pool furniture off the roof and down onto High Street. ‘Cause why not? If you’re Ozzy Osbourne, you can do whatever you want.

Well, not quite. Ozzy was police escorted out of the city and as the article shares, the pool was closed because everyone wants to be a rockstar and guests started hurling furniture off the roof just like their idol.

Ozzy Osbourne Throws Furniture From Hotel

That is not the first time and may not even be the last time that Ozzy throws furniture from a hotel window or rooftop. Just two years ago in March of 2020, the ex-Black Sabbath singer pushed a 50-inch TV set through a ninth floor window of a Four Seasons in Prague and, according to the star himself, it “landed on the floor and f***** exploded. It went like a bomb.”

These little moments are extremely mild compared to Osbourne’s other stunts, from peeing on cop cars to throwing meat at his fans and, of course, the infamous bat bite.

I’m honored that Portland made it as a setting in one of his many stories but I’m pretty bummed we lost a rooftop pool. But, it sounds like it went out with a bang.
