Pfizer booster shots approved by the CDC on Thursday night are already available at Seacoast pharmacies.

The CDC approved the booster for people aged 65 years and older, residents in long-term care settings, people aged 18-64 years with underlying medical conditions and people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting six months after receiving their initial two Pfizer shots.

"With the Delta variant’s dominance as the circulating strain and cases of COVID-19 increasing significantly across the United States, a booster shot will help strengthen protection against severe disease in those populations who are at high-risk for exposure to COVID-19 or the complications from severe disease," the CDC said in a statement.

A doctor's note is not necessary to receive the shot.

The CDC said it will work quickly to make additional recommendations for other populations or people who got the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

The Pfizer booster is available at these pharmacies:

  • CVS is accepting appointments on its website
  • Rite Aid will offer walk-in vaccinations immediately. Appointments can be scheduled on the chain's website beginning Saturday
  • Walgreens will begin scheduling appointments on its website on Saturday
  • Walmart is accepting appointments on its website

President Joe Biden on Friday during a White House briefing said 60 million people who received their shot in January or February are eligible. Among those eligible are the president and while he urged people to get their booster immediately he didn't appear to be in a hurry himself

"I’ll be getting my booster shot. I’m not sure exactly when I’m going to do it — as soon as I can get it done," Biden said.
