During Maine's summer tourist season, people "from away" flock to Maine to visit and have some of the best seafood in the country. Lobster is obviously one of the big choices, of course.
I always find it funny when tourists are surprised that live lobsters aren't red. We don't help educate them very well when the State of Maine has released two different lobster license plates with both lobsters red, including one sitting on rocks at the coast.
According to mainelobsternow.com, the first Maine lobster catch was recorded in 1605. That was over 400 years ago! The website also states that lobster is actually healthy for you, so eat up if you're a fan.
When looking for a seafood place, tourists will stick close to coastal towns like Kennebunk, York, Portland, Rockland and Bar Harbor. It seems logical that the best seafood would be at the coast, but that's not necessarily true.
But we Mainers know the not-so-obvious choices for seafood and where to stay away from the tourists when they arrive for the season. Just because they aren't along the coast doesn't mean that they don't get freshly caught seafood on a regular basis. Seafood is available all over the state and despite how far inland you go, it's still fresher than you'll get in Idaho.
So if you're looking for great seafood away from the tourists, and don't mind a scenic drive to places you never thought of when going out for seafood, here are five great restaurants in Maine that serve a variety of great seafood that the tourists probably don't know about.
