A criminal investigation that drew a large police presence to Bennett Island on Bow Lake came to an end early Saturday morning and caused the last minute cancellation of a long scheduled road race.

The subject of the investigation was taken into custody around 1:40 a.m. without incident and is being evaluated at a hospital, according to New Hampshire State Police. Details about the investigation were not disclosed.

Residents of the island located in both Northwood and Strafford were warned by State Police of a large police presence Friday afternoon.

The incident forced the cancellation of the Bow Lake Dam 15K/5K Race To Cure Cystic Fibrosis.

"We are heartbroken to have to cancel but we must do what is best for the safety of everyone involved. They are asking the public to please stay away from the Bow Lake area," organizers of the race said in a statement on their Facebook page.

Participants will receive an email about what will happen next.

The race was scheduled to start at the Grange Hall on Water Street on the very eastern end of Bow Lake.
