Two Exeter police offices wrangled stray goats found along Portsmouth Avenue Tuesday morning.

The goats were spotted across from the Ira auto dealership around 10:30 a.m. and were scooped up by officers Nicholas Patterson and Michael Ingenito. The two found the goats very friendly and easy to capture. One was especially relaxed, according to Patterson.

“The first one I put in actually started licking my ear as I was carrying it,” Patterson said.

The second was a bit nervous but relaxed for the ride home around 11 a.m., when their owner was getting ready to go find them.

Repeat Offender

One of the goats was a repeat offender and had met Officer Ingenito before after an escape in 2020. Ingenito used a picture of that capture as his department trading card image.

For Patterson, a rookie officer who graduated the Police Academy in December, it was his first encounter with a goat.
