Landscaping equipment is likely the cause of a fire in a building next to the ferris wheel at Canobie Lake Park Wednesday morning.

A 911 call came in about the fire around 11 a.m. while the Salem Fire Department was already responding to five other events, according to Fire Chief Larry Best.

Salem Police who were training at the park used their fire extinguishers to control the spread of the fire before firefighters arrived. Crews from from Methuen, Windham and off-duty Salem firefighters also responded.

Firefighters found a piece of landscaping equipment used to clear leaves on fire which had spread to the outside of a building where landscaping is stored. The fire caused several thousand dollars worth of damage, according to Bet. There was also some damage inside the building.

Some firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and minor skin burns but were treated on site.

The park is closed for the season.
