The mortgage of late Newington Fire Chief Darin Sabine was paid off by Tunnel to Towers Foundation which takes care of the families of fallen firefighters around the country.

Chief Sabine, 35, passed away on September 7, 2019 after a two-year battle against job-related colon cancer leaving behind his wife Jennifer and young daughters Sophia and Mya. He was born and raised in Newington and remembered for his love of firefighting and serving the community.

Jennifer Sabine's eyes filled with tears as she was presented with documentation showing the mortgage had been paid in full.

"With all the tears we have shed in the last few years it was a wonderful feeling to reassure my five year old daughter that yes, yes they were very happy tears. Knowing that myself and my two young daughters have a home, our home, paid off, and forever ours is hard to put into words. I am endlessly grateful to the team of amazing people associated with Tunnel to Towers for making this possible."

The foundation, created in memory of off duty FDNY firefighter Steven Siller who lost his life on September 11, 2001 paid off the mortgages of 19 fallen first responder families around the country for the Independence Day holiday.

"An extra layer to the honor of receiving our mortgage being paid off is that it is in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and the establishment of the Foundation, and in observance of Independence Day. My husband was a proud, life-long firefighter whose passion to help others preceded him and I know given the choice he would do it all again."

The Sabine Strong 3.3 Mile & Kids Dash will be run on Sunday, August 15 at Newington Old Town Hall to benefit the Nutfield Protection Fire District which helps support first responders and their families affected by cancer.

The race length is in honor of the name of Newington Fire Company 33.

Graffiti is back in Dover along the Community Trail but a committee is being created to deal with the issue and look at whether or not it's the work of artists hoping to be noticed.
