The executive assistant to Portsmouth Police Chief Mark Newport was charged with driving under the influence following a crash early Saturday morning.

New Hampshire State Police said Jackie Burnett, 35, of Hampton was involved in a crash on Peverly Hill Road in Portsmouth just before 2 a.m. that brought down wires. Portsmouth Police asked State Police to cover the crash, when officers learned a city employee was involved.

Burnett has a court date in Portsmouth on the charge March 29 at 8:39 a.m.

Her employment status with the department is not clear. She responded to an email from Seacoast Current on another subject Saturday morning.

A State Police spokeswoman did not know if Burnett took a breathalyzer test.

Burnett was previously the department's Accreditation Manager before taking on her current position upon the retirement of longtime assistant Kathleen Levesque.
