A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southern Maine and that could affect the cities of Rochester and Somersworth in New Hampshire.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, say this warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m.

Thunder could be heard in Dover, NH, at 5 p.m.

Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these lightning safety tips to avoid getting struck this summer:

  • Be aware. Check the weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities.
  • Go indoors. Remember the phrase, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” Find a safe, enclosed shelter when you hear thunder.
  • Seek shelter immediately even if caught out in the open.
