Ruh Roh Raggy. The headline is true. Two New England cities have officially made a list, and not the good kind.
Two cities in New England have been included in the top 100 'Most Dangerous Cities' in America for 2023.
The list comes from a Neighborhood Scout article, based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. "Violent crimes include rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault," according to the article. "The data used for this research are the number of violent crimes reported to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city."
Many of the dangerous cities on the list for 2023 have appeared on the list before. In fact, both New England cities have been on this list before.
Let's start with the #1, most dangerous city in America: Bessemer, Alabama. Out of 1,000 residents, the crime rate is 33.1. Just as scary, your chance of being a victim in Bessemer is 1 in 30.
So, let's chat about New England. Ranking in at #87 was Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Holyoke is located in western Massachusetts and has a violent crime rate of 9.6. Your chance of being a victim in Holyoke is 1 in 103.
Holyoke is 11 miles north of the third largest city in Massachusetts and the fourth largest in all of New England, Springfield, Massachusetts.
It should come as no surprise that Springfield, Massachusetts is the second city that has made the list of America's 'Most Dangerous Cities' 2023. The city ranked at #99.
Springfield's violent crime rate of 9.3. Your chance of being a victim in Springfield is 1 in 106. But Springfield and surrounding areas like Holyoke have come a long way.
Just three years ago, in 2020, Springfield ranked 69 (as compared to 2023 - 99).
Springfield is commonly known as the “City of Firsts” – "a moniker earned through a history of innovation, including America’s first Armory and military arsenal and the first American-made automobile," according to a Springfield Gov article. "Springfield may be best known for two other innovations - the birthplace of basketball and of Theodor Geisel, better known as 'Dr. Seuss'."
