One person was found dead in a fire early Monday morning in Barnstead.

The Barnstead Fire Department responded to the fire on Varney Road around 3:25 a.m. and found a fully engulfed single family home, according to New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey. Additional fire companies from Gilmanton, Alton, Pittsfield, Strafford, Epsom, and Farmington were all called in to assist.

Toomey said after the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the body of 72-year-old Frances Barrett inside the house. A cause and manner of death are pending.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office and the Barnstead Fire and Police Departments.
