Firefighters and drivers passing the scene pulled the driver out of a car that went off a South Hampton road and into a river Thursday afternoon.

South Hampton Police Chief Robert Roy said the car went off Hilldale Road and into Powwow River around 4:40 p.m. after hitting the guardrail which gave way. The swift current because of recent rains and high water took the vehicle under the bridge, according to Roy.

Several drivers were already trying to get the driver out when South Hampton Fire Rescue personnel arrived. He was removed from the vehicle and taken to Exeter Hospital where he were pronounced dead.

Roy did not disclose the driver's identity pending notification of family except to say he is a South Hampton resident.

The bridge was damaged in the crash and was closed indefinitely pending an inspection, according to Roy.

Fire, police and rescue personnel from Amesbury, East Kingston, Newton and Kensington all responded to the scene.

Roy asked anyone with information about the crash to call 603-394-0105.
