🔴 Darien Young walked away from transitional housing in Manchester July 21

🔴 The Department of Corrections said he was shot by police in Miami Beach

A Gonic man who walked away from a New Hampshire transitional housing was killed while holding two women at knifepoint inside a Victoria's Secret store in Miami Beach Thursday.

Darien Young, 29, was considered to have escaped from the Calumet House in Manchester on July 21 when he walked off the grounds and didn't return, according to the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. He had been charged with two counts of receiving stolen property, controlled drug acts prohibited, burglary, and falsifying physical evidence. Young was eligible for parole on July 31.

Miami Beach police told WPLG TV that Young was shot by an officer after taking a mother and daughter hostage at the store inside the Lincoln Center shopping center around 5:30 p.m. An officer fired his weapon at Young, who later died at a hospital.

No one was injured in the incident.

Young's whereabouts between leaving the transitional house and Miami Beach are not known.

A witness who took video of the incident told WPLG it started with a shoplifting. WTVJ reported police evacuated other stores in the outdoor shopping area while the hostage incident took place.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
