New Hampshire Man Charged in Fatal Delaware Crash

An Effingham man driving without a license was charged in a fatal crash that killed his passenger early Sunday morning.

Delaware State Police said John B. White was driving his Ford Focus below the speed limit in the right lane of Route 95 in Newark just after 4 a.m. when a tractor trailer driven approached from behind. As the trucker moved into the center lane to pass the Ford, police say White pulled into the center lane in front of the truck and was struck from the rear, according to police.

Police said the trucker, a 37-year-old Newark man, was unable to avoid the collision.

The car and the truck moved back into the right lane and into the exit ramp for Route 896 near the Maryland border, where they came to a stop.

White's passenger, a 56-year-old Virginia woman, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital where she died. She and White were not wearing seat belts.

Police did not disclose her identity pending notification of family.

White was charged with operation of a vehicle causing death of another person, driving without a valid driver license, improper lane change, and failure to signal a lane change. He is being held on $1,500 secured bond at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
