Several pets died in a house fire Tuesday morning in South Berwick.

The South Berwick Fire Department said a fire on Witchtrot Road in South Berwick was reported around 8 a.m.. Firefighters greeted with thick black smoke were able to contain the fire to the first floor of the Cape-style home.

No residents were home at the time of the fire, but a number of pets died.

According to a Facebook post by a relative of the homeowner, the family lost many "cherished belongings and every day necessities" to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
