An Airsoft gun fired Sunday night in Somersworth drew a large police response.

Somersworth Police Chief Tim McLin told Seacoast Current that the incident at Main Street and Central Street was called in around 7 p.m. after someone heard a "popping noise."

"It came in as a possible shooting so they sent a lot of people in preparation for that, but it turned out to just be an Airsoft gun, thank God," McLin said.

A car and a person were hit by a projectile fired from the gun, but no one was injured according to the Chief. A dozen people were gathered in the street when the Airsoft gun was fired and tried to continue previous disputes, according to McLin.

McLin said that people were "less than cooperative" about the investigation and no one would say they had been shot.

Airsoft guns often have a realistic look to them and shoot plastic projectiles that leave a mark, especially if they are fired at close range.
