Three people died in a wrong-way crash and fire on the Maine Turnpike in Portland Wednesday night.

Maine State Police spokeswoman Shannon Moss said a Honda Civic sedan heading south in the northbound lanes near Exit 48 (Route 25/Route 302) hit a silver 2020 Ford F150 pickup truck head-on around 9:40 p.m. The Honda then hit a second vehicle, a black 2013 Toyota Rav4, head-on, causing both to becoming fully engulfed in fire.

The single occupant of the Rav4 and two people in the Honda were pronounced dead at the crash scene, according to Moss. The driver of the pickup was not injured.

The Medical Examiners office are working to identify the three victims of the crash, and an investigation is ongoing by Maine State Police.

The initial investigation and crash closed the northbound lanes north of Exit 45 (I-295) in South Portland for approximately two hours.
