A pedestrian was seriously injured Tuesday morning while crossing an intersection in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Police said the pedestrian was struck on Marcy Street near State Street and an entrance into Prescott Park around 4:55 a.m. The pedestrian was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was found a short distance away, and is cooperating with police. The identities of the driver and pedestrian were not disclosed by police.

A picture posted on the Portsmouth, NH Facebook page shows a backpack and shoe on the ground and a tipped over recycling container just inside the park entrance.

The area of lower State Street, Marcy Street, and the entrance to Prescott Park will be closed for several hours for an investigation.
